Driving Towards The Daylight Review

Joe bonamassa driving towards the daylight cover

Joe’s newest album titled “Driving Towards The Daylight” hits stores shelves on May 22nd. Joe’s lucky 13th album, was recorded with Kevin “Caveman” Shirley. This was their seventh collaboration over the past six years. Recorded at Studio At The Palms in Las Vegas, NV, The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, CA, and The Cave in Malibu, CA, Driving Towards The Daylight is a true blues rock album, that puts a rock twist on traditional blues songs. I’ve been lucky enough to listen to “Driving Towards The Daylight” since early April. In this review, I will cover the album and my thoughts about it.. here we go!

Driving Towards The Daylight opens with “Dislocated Boy “. This track brings in the feeling of a heavier blues rock and is a Bonamassa original. Joe rips right into 1930′s blues. Right off the bat, you can tell how much Joe’s voice has improved. Up next Joe plays tribute to one of the original bluesman, Robert Johnson. Joe does a spectacular job covering “Stones In My Passway“. Original song was done in the 1930′s, but you can’t tell by listening with Joe putting his own blues rock spin to it. Great song and also a great way to pay tribute to someone who shares the same birthday as Joe (May 8th).

One of the best tracks on the album, in my opinion.. “Driving Towards The Daylight“. This one of Joe’s strongest songs to date and is a pure Bonamassa original. This song can best be described as a blues rock ballad, that hits home. The lyrics in this song are so powerful and make so much sense. Killer, jaw dropping guitar riffs. Not a song to be missed. We then hear another great cover “Who’s Been Talkin” by Howlin Wolf’. This song has a unique intro, you can hear Howlin Wolf’ talking about music. Joe did a fabulous job with this track. The original version of this song had a lot of harmonica playing. With Joe covering this song, you’ll hear a lot of guitar. No complaints! How about another awesome song? Willie Dixon’s “I Got All You Need“. Another one of my favorite songs of the album, this song is more of a fast paced blues tune. One thing that I noticed, which primarily stands out on this track is the terrific keyboard playing by Arlan Schierbaum. Overall a great song, which leads you to notice listening to this album it gets better and better.

Drum roll! Up next “A Place In My Heart” by Bernie Marsden. For those of you who do not know who Bernie is, he well known for his work with Whitesnake. This might be one of the only, if not the only, song Joe plays where a drum roll opens the song. Not to be mistaken, right after the drums, Joe goes directly into one of the most jaw dropping solos that I’ve ever heard him play. And that guitar playing does not let up, it continues throughout the whole song. Time to pick up my jaw and move on to the next song, which is “Lonely Town Lonely Street“. Bill Withers originally wrote this song. Although I have not heard of this song before, I have heard of other Bill Withers songs, such as “Lean on Me” & “Ain’t No Sunshine”. I had to check out the original, which I did find on YouTube. Joe’s version vs. the original, is quite different. While the beat is the same, the music itself is not. Fantastic electric guitar playing by Joe is just brilliant, which separates it from the original’s tone.

Joe bonamassa driving towards the daylight 2

Heavenly Soul” follows and is another original Bonamassa tune. Great song it is, I love the new twist that Joe is taking on his songwriting. It is not really possible classify this song as a blues tune nor a rock tune. This song is in it’s own genre, with some amazing vocals. If this track is not a clear indication of how much Joe’s vocals have improved, I don’t know what is. You might recall that on one of Joe’s previous studio recordings, “The Ballad of John Henry”, Joe covered a Tom Waits’ tune. On this album, Joe has covered another Tom Wait’s tune, “New Coat of Paint“. This song has a blues rock vibe to it, not only because it is Tom Wait’s tune, but because of the way Joe has revamped the song itself. The way Joe has redone this song makes it one of my favorite covers on the album. The original version by Tom Waits’ was mostly piano driven, as the prominent instrument.

My second favorite song on the album has to be “Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go“. You ask why? Let me tell you! It’s another fine, I mean fine, Bonamassa original. This song in particular is pure rock. I love it, the vocals, the guitar playing, everything about it. This song definitely has potential to be on a Black Country Communion album. Joe’s singing on this number is just stellar and I’m a fan on that slide guitar work. The last song on Joe’s “Driving Towards The Daylight” is “Too Much Ain’t Enough Love” by Jimmy Barnes. Jimmy sings the vocals on it too. His voice is par-none, I never heard of Jimmy before this record. After hearing his voice on this track, I don’t’ know how. It’s can best be described as a raspy voice, one of the best I’ve ever heard.

Driving Towards The Daylight” is eleven tracks of pure epicness. It’s due out for release on May 22nd. I recommend that you pick up a copy. The album is available for preorder here. The band playing on the record consists of Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford (guitar), Blondie Chaplin (guitar), Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboard), Michael Rhodes (bass), Carmine Rojas (bass), Jeff Bova and The Bovaland Brass, Pat Thrall (guitar), and Brad’s son Harrison Whitford (guitar). This record can be considered Joe’s best yet. A must have! Make sure to order yours today.

Indianapolis Hears Tea for One with Doug Henthorn

Folks who attended Joe’s Saturday night gig in Indianapolis, IN got a special treat. On Joe’s self titled album “You & Me” he covered a Led Zeppelin tune named “Tea for One”. Before this video, I do not know of any other recording of Joe performing this song live. Doug Henthorn sang on this song. This is the first time where Joe and Doug were able to get together on one stage and play. Hope you enjoy this video, even though it is not the best quality, still captures an amazing moment. If you’ve haven’t heard of Doug Henthorn before, you need to check out his band “Healing Sixes“.

Bonamassa Inducting Freddie King at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

freddy-king

This Saturday, April 14 marks the ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony. Joe Bonamassa will be one of the special guests inducting blues legend, Freddy King. NPR interviewed Joe about inducting Freddy King.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to Freddie and other original bluesmen for, basically, the songbook they gave us,” blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa says. “Freddie was more of a rock guitar player. Freddie always had a dry, immediate sound.”

While B.B. and Albert King are known for their exquisite, minimalist solos with sinewy bends and telltale vibrato, Freddie King was a little more rock ‘n’ roll.

“I can easily identify his sound and his style,” Bonamassa says. “The attack and the intensity — you can tell who he is in three notes, you know?”

Joe will also be joined on stage by Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top to play tribute to Freddy King. Read the rest of NPR’s news story here.

Live From New York–Beacon Theatre DVD Review

joe-bonamassa-beacon-dvd-front

This past weekend, I opened the mailbox. Going through the normal glorious junk mail, I found my advance copy of the Beacon DVD. I watched it immediately. The DVD created the show all over again. I remember those cold November nights, the 4th and 5th. Up I walk to the famous Beacon Theatre, where my longtime favorite guitar player is playing. He’s made it to the top, this it. The Beacon.

Joe did play two shows at the Beacon. Footage from both shows, mostly Saturday, was used for the DVD. First song up is Slow Train.  With two minutes to midnight playing in the background, the stage goes black. The train is coming! Joe rips into Slow Train. Next song Joe plays is Cradle Rock. One of Joe’s first hit songs, in my opinion. I haven’t seen this song live in quite awhile. It’s great to see Joe bringing the some back, 10 years after it was originally released. Here is the complete listing for the DVD:

Disc One:

1:  72nd St. Subway Blues
2:  Slow Train
3:  Cradle Rock
4:  When The Fire Hits The Sea
5:  Midnight Blues
6:  Dust Bowl
7:  The River
8:  I’ll Take Care Of You  (w/ Beth Hart)
9:  Sinner’s Prayer  (w/ Beth Hart)
10:  You Better Watch Yourself
11:  Steal Your Heart Away
12:  Bird On A Wire
13:  Down Around My Place  (w/ John Hiatt)
14:  I Know A Place  (w/ John Hiatt)
15:  Blue And Evil
16:  Walk In My Shadows  (w/ Paul Rodgers)
17:  Fire And Water  (w/ Paul Rodgers)
18:  Mountain Time
19:  Young Man Blues

joe-bonamassa-beacon-dvds

Disc Two, the second DVD, contains bonus content. It contains two songs, the first being If Heartaches Were Nickels and the second song is Woke Up Dreaming. Other bonus footage on the DVD includes a clip with Joe and David Crosby. Joe with his eyes peeled open gets an acoustic guitar lesson from David Crosby. You’ll also see more footage from Joe playing in the 72nd St Subway Station. Joe made no money in the subway station sadly. Good thing he is sticking with his day job! Lastly, there is a huge photo gallery. The photo gallery includes behind the scene pictures from the beacon. The pictures cover backstage, sound check, and Joe reviewing the setlist with Kevin Shirley. My favorite part about the bonus disc, Woke Up Dreaming. Each performance of this song just continues to get  better and better.

The overall setlist they picked for the show was not bad at all. I thought it was a great selection that covered many different eras of Joe’s work. I’ve heard a lot of different opinions from various people. Why didn’t they do Just Got Paid? Honestly, that’s simple. Joe had several special guests, each doing two songs. Just Got Paid was on the Royal Albert Hall DVD. I’m glad Joe picked Young Man Blues to be part of the setlist. I know that’s a long song, but hey, the connection between Joe and Tal during this song is just priceless. I like it better than Just Got Paid!

My favorite special guest that played with Joe has to be Paul Rodgers. Joe opened for Paul Rodgers almost 10 years ago. Joe has also done several songs that Paul Rodgers has wrote. One of them being Walk In My Shadows, which we see on the DVD. The other was Seagull from Joe’s CD titled Sloe Gin. Paul Rodgers has an incredible voice that one has to hear live to get the full effect. Paul and Joe nailed Fire and Water. Great song.

joe-bonamassa-beacon-dvd-back

The overall production of this DVD is great. Just like Joe’s other produced films, this DVD was filmed by Bangor Films. They are based out of Canada, they’ve recorded many other notable performances such as Joe’s RAH show and they also did the documentary for Iron Maiden. The camera crew on hand for the Beacon shooting was in the teens. If you did attend both nights – hope you were not one of those stuck behind a camera guy! Not all songs played made the DVD. Both Sloe Gin and Ballad of John Henry were recorded. One song was played each night. Not exactly sure why they didn’t make the cut. As stated before, majority if not all of the first DVD was recorded on Saturday night.

In conclusion, was this show better than RAH? Well, that’s up to you determine. RAH had a large house band with a different setlist. RAH also had Eric Clapton as special guest. Beacon did not have Clapton, but it sure did have three other spectacular guests: Beth Hart, John Hiatt, Paul Rodgers. I personally like the Beacon better because I was at the show. It’s great to have a copy of your all time favorite Joe show on DVD. I also feel that Joe’s playing was dead on, top notch for this show.  I highly recommend this DVD. If you’re a JB fan, this needs to be in your collection. His performances keep getting better and better. Where will Joe go next? Only time will tell. Make you pre-order your Beacon DVD today, you do not want to miss out… click here.

New Lithograph “Midnight Blues” Sold Out?

midnight-blues-lithograph

Got an email earlier today about the new lithograph “Midnight Blues”, which is the seventh in the series. Features Joe ripping up a solo on one of his Les Paul’s. Tried to access the link to Joe’s store to see if there were any available and guess what.. link does not work! Appears that the lithograph is now no longer available on the website. Only 100 of each lithograph is sold, which makes it a collector’s item. The price of the lithograph is not a bad deal at all. I’ve heard several people talking about the price, but for $399 you’re getting a lot. Take into consideration that the photo itself has to get matted and framed. This is not done by a local rag shop, it’s professionally framed. Plus, you’re getting two tickets and meet n’ greet passes. The tickets you get from purchasing lithographs are very good seats. They’re not up in the nose bleeds. With ticket prices rising, scalpers going nuts, purchasing a lithograph is a smart way to secure good seats. The meet n’ greet is awesome too. Up and close with Joe, he will take photos with you, sign any item. He is one of the most down to earth people. That’s just my two cents. Congrats to all of those who were lucky enough to snag #7.

Joe Bonamassa Plays with Gov’t Mule

Not necessarily a new video, but definitely a classic. Joe played on stage with Gov’t Mule in Chicago during October of 2009. They played Albert King’s “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” Warren and Joe need to collaborate on more projects. Two of the best guitar plays on one stage, priceless indeed. Shall we take bets on how long it will be before Joe and Warren work together again? Joe covered If Heartaches Were Nickels on his first studio release, A New Day Yesterday.
